Oh, man.
I’m so stoked for this series.
I first saw Cowboy Bebop back in the early 2000s, after an RA in my dorm found out I hadn’t seen the series before. My ass was immediately thrown in a chair and my eyes were held open as I took in the stunning title sequence and the auditory goodness that is ‘Tank’ by The Seatbelts.
After that, I was hooked. I binged the series in a matter of days and couldn’t wait to convert others like a teen screaming about how good Takis are on Vine.
After the series, I found out about the film and ho boy, yet again, blown away. If you haven’t seen it, here’s the first few minutes:
This is how a dub should be done, people. Steve Blum’s voice was ASMR before we had, ya know, that.
So in the next few years, it seemed like Hollywood got the idea to pay attention to our Japanese friends and start trying to adapt things for American audiences to enjoy.
Needless to say, it didn’t go very well.
I thought it was my responsibility to show Hollywood that anime was worth the trouble. I still hold heartily that Kokoro Connect could make an amazingly good Freeform show, or that Honey and Clover would be awesome on MTV.
But it looks like I’m going to be beat to the punch.
Now I know, I know. There have been quite a few live-action anime adaptations at this point, but I don’t want to talk about any of them anymore. It simply…hurts…too much.
“BUT THIS TIME IS DIFFERENT,” I scream, scaring my dog and freaking out my wife.
What makes it different, StarLord?
Yeah. This thing looks like everyone who worked on it is giving a rats rootie patootie.
And not just anyone either. I’m talking awesome writers like Jeff Pinker and Chris Yhost as well as directors like Alex Lopez and Michael Katleman.
And don’t even get me started on the cast.
….
TOO LATE
FREAKING JOHN CHO, DANIELLA PINEDA, AND MUSTAFA SHAKIR TO NAME A FEW.
COME ON.
If you haven’t watched the Lost Session, here’s the link. For goodness sake, put that on the biggest TV in your house.
I lost it when Green Bird faded into the background, omfG!
This looks like something Tarantino would’ve done with the bright cleverness and fast-paced editing of Scott Pilgrim.
There’s no two ways about it. They’re on the right track more than they’re not.
I’ll stop here just to say I’ve already paid ahead on my Netflix subscription for the next two months. I’m there opening night. Let this show start a trend of goodness in the anime adaptation world!
