(mild spoilers)
Imagine the following scene.
I’ve just finished watching Top Gun Maverick on the biggest movie theater screen in Colorado.
My fat ass is holding a empty tub of popcorn and a pee that should have been emptied 40 minutes prior but I was afraid to miss anything.
As the movie ended, I didn’t rush to the bathroom, no. I went and got one more large tub of free popcorn refill because yes I am that kind of movie goer and popcorn is one of the most damn delicious things on the planet.
Then I booked it to my car.
As I hit the cruise control at 75 mph, I could hear the voice of Maverick in my head wanting me to push the vehicle to 77, no, 78 mph. HAD TO PUSH IT TO THE MAX!
“Talk to me, Goose….”
((AND THEN LATER ON “TALK TO ME DAD??” GTFO!))
I was navigating the freeway as if I was a fighter jet pilot myself. Weaving in and out of my lanes (with my turn signal on, I’m not a monster) and being extra attentive to things on the road.
I genuinely can’t think of the last time walking out of a movie made me feel that way.
You know the way.
That moment when you’re no longer a person in your 30s but you’re nine or ten or thirteen again and you are imagining yourself being a part of the movie.
I think the last time I felt this way was either the web slinging sequence in the first Spider-Man movie or the flight sequence in How to Train Your Dragon. What a delight it was to feel that feeling again.
In case you can’t tell, I’m really highly recommending you see this thing on the biggest screen possible.
What is the movie perfect in every way shape or form? Nah, but what movie is?
There’s really only two or three things I would have wanted to see made better but dammit all if that wasn’t a fun as hell ride.
I can’t think of the last movie I saw where act three ended and then another act three started. So many awesome writing tricks were on here, but I’ll talk about them another day. And the directing? If you had told me this was the same dude who made the famous Gears of War Mad World commercial and Tron: Legacy…I would’ve believed you. Like, 100%
Just, hurry up and go see this. Gah. It’s great to be alive when movies like Dune and Top Gun Maverick are freaking coming out.
