State of the Writing Address: 1st Quarter Check-In of 2021

Glad I got such a great response on the Scene Breakdown post. Will definitely do more of those in the future 🙂

Today’s post is a little different. I just wanted to take a post and go through the various projects I’ve posted on the homepage and check in on where everything is at. I’m happy to admit that I 100% stole the progress bars from another writer I follow and hope to utilize them as often as I can.

Hopefully, this post will help sort of re-spark where I’m slowing down and maybe even re-spark where you’re at with your various creative endeavors!

Maybe it’s time to add a few more things in there? We’ll see.

FIRSTLY: My first novel


I’m busting through this 147k word draft right now. Trouble is, I’m genuinely having a tough time getting it knocked out. I know I just have to start dedicating a minimum of 30 minutes of hardcore LEAVE ME ALONE time to get it done, but it’s been tough as of late. 


So I’m less pleased with where this one is. I know there’s probably definitely maybe at least 1 more full draft to go before I take this to friends and family, but I’m committing to be able to turn it into 10 beta readers before this year is over.

We’ll see. Either way, I’m really excited for it to be done.

Like, there’s saying that right? But then, the butt in chair stuff can be tough!  DANGIT! That means that advice is good after all!

Still, it took me five years to write my first novel, whereas–
 
SECONDLY: My second novel (unrelated to first)
 
First off, that bar is just sad.
 
I tried doing 0% but a whole lot of nothing was there. So I had to do 1% (lol) to at least have the color show. The color btw is Dangerous Red!
 
HWWWHHAAT?
 
I will say, I think about this one often. I wrote it wicked fast and at a mere 65k, it’s definitely not as long as it should be, but I got that vomit draft on the page. This is another I’m committing to have to readers before the year is over for a 2022 release.
 
THIRDLY: Comic Adaptation
 
 
This one has been the most turbulent. The artist we had previously announced ended up leaving the project due to personal/family reasons and we had to go back to the drawing board all over again. FINALLY, we have another new artist and now we’re doing weekly meetings where we go through story beats and plan our eventual crowdfunding campaign. So super stoked about that one.

FOURTHLY AND FINALLY AT THE MOMENT: Animated Spec

This one started off about 6 years ago when I was genuinely daydreaming in the basement. I’ll tell the whole story someday, but for now, I’m happy to report that the draft that I am MOST happiest with EVER is in the hands of someone I know can make something happen with it. 

Now we play the waiting game. Looking forward to the next reach out where I found what’s next. Haven’t been in this position since my last spec (the script formally known as Henchman) went wide. We’ll see what happens!
